Are we always asleep when God hail leaders among us?

I always believe that God raise leaders when a nation is in dire need of it. In our history, it is very evident. We had so many leaders who were raised in the past, called to uphold freedom, some succeeded yet others did not. But despite of our country’s whirlwind history and brush against freedom and captivity, lies the fact that we are a nation of heroes and hope. Actually the question is not about the abundance of right leaders, its the question of whether we are aware of the leaders God raises for us.

I was reflecting on our country’s lineage of good leaders in past and in present after I saw the proclamation speech of Mar Roxas joining the vice presidential bid for the LP, until I remember that this hype and excitement over Mar Roxas and Noynoy Aquino tandem is but all a Deja Vu.

In 1986 we had our Cory Aquino who was raised from anonymity and subsequently became the Nation’s first woman President. But after that it seems the Filipinos played complacent until our country, not so long ago, fell again into two corrupt leaders that the nation ever had since the fall of the Dictator.

We always complain that we had no choice but to select a lesser evil among the vagabonds of Trapos, but we always fail to see the signs of the times. God raises leaders, people have to look for the signs in order to recognize.

In 1998, change came in the form of Raul Roco when he ran for President. Raul Roco was very popular among the young. He was well educated, intelligent and have worked with other Filipino Heroes such as Ninoy Aquino being one of his staff. He was also the one who helped Aquino draft the Study Now, Pay Later Plan which Ninoy passed as a legislature in the Senate. Most of the Young voters then voted for him as they saw hope in him. Most of these young Filipinos volunteered for free during his campaign and some Activist Artist even supported Roco in his campaign, but the overpowering majority of the fickle minded pinoy masa voted for Joseph Estrada instead. and soon we fell into a corruption stained government once again up until now.

We must remember that God raises hope when a nation needs it. But we should ask ourselves if during the time that God is giving us the sign, are we awake or asleep?

Today God gave us another chance to redeem our land. Out of nowhere he plucked out of obscurity an unlikely candidate, an antithesis of everything we see and hear in Philippine Politics, will this leader God raised for us end up like Raul Roco? Set aside for a more charming candidate on the basis of popularity?

It’s up to us to decide… Let’s not waste the opportunity or time might come that there would be no more good leaders to choose from…

watch this very inspiring ad of Raul Roco during his previous Campaign… the same awakening, the same idealism, the same change we want, but failed to achieve…
